Designer, lecturer, and design executive with over two decades of experience working for brands, crafting digital products, and interactive experiences.

Head of Design at Opal Camera.
2022 / Present.

I work at Opal Camera Inc. as their Head of Design. I lead brand, digital product and marketing design efforts across the board working with internal and external teams. This past year the team has accomplished a lot. We refreshed our full website, launched a new companion app for macOS, released a new device, the Opal Tadpole, and started working on new, exciting, things. If you want to learn more about what we are up to visit our site or see some bits and pieces here.

Executive Creative Director at Huge Inc.
2019 / 2022.

Prior to Opal I was the Executive Creative Director at Huge Inc. in Oakland, responsible for the creative department at Huge’s West Coast office. I worked alongside strategist and business counterparts overseeing and actively jamming on the work, the business growth of the branch, and nurturing and growing an outstanding team of over twenty visual designers, user experience designers, copywriters, motion and 3D designers. At Huge, I led teams and worked for clients such as Google, Riot Games, Samsung, Playstation and Panasonic among others, in projects that span from pure upstream concept work to ready to ship products, integrated campaigns, interactive installations and branding among others.

Creative Director at Microsoft Fluent
2016 / 2018.

Before joining Huge, I worked at Microsoft in Seattle where I managed teams that worked on future audio and video experiences for Windows and later for the visual design efforts of Fluent Design, the new groundbreaking design system based on leveraging our understanding of the real world to improve how we use our computers. This highly detailed and visionary work is still coming to fruition in the most recent Windows updates. I was able to tell the full story and rationale at TEDx Berkeley in 2018.

Designer to Lead
2006 / 2016.

Prior to Microsoft I spent over 10 years working at agencies such as B-Reel, Fantasy Interactive, Elephant and a few others working in Spain, United Kingdom and ultimately the US. I’ve designed and led projects for brands like Apple, Oculus, Adobe, CNN, EA, Lonely Planet, Nickelodeon, Kayak and 23andme among others. I hold patents from companies like Microsoft and 23andme and now Opal Camera and my work has been awarded in the past by the European Design Awards, One Show, Webby Awards and even an Emmy Award for an Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media for my work on the Nickelodeon App. For the past gazillion years I’ve also done work on verticals including healthcare, education, e-commerce, travel, music and video streaming, gaming and news platforms and entertainment.

Over the past 20 years I’ve worn a lot of hats and done a lot of things. Here are a few of the things I’m good at and enjoy doing at work.

Over the past 20 years I’ve worn a lot of hats and done a lot of things. Here are a few of the things I’m good at and enjoy doing at work.

1

Product design.

Over the years I have worked, hands-on and led teams working on digital products for a wide range of industries. From music to gaming, healthcare, food, education, social networks, travel... (you name it) for the likes of Adobe, Riot Games, Google, 23andme, Lonelyplanet, Microsoft, Mighty or Playground Ai among others.

I’ve done this while working at agencies but also in-house for companies like Microsoft where I led the Music and Video experiences in Windows 10 and currently for Opal with Composer, a macOS companion app for your Opal Cameras.

Product Northstars.

Product Northstars.

I’ve partnered with companies like Google, Microsoft, Kayak and Oculus among others researching, ideating, testing, validating and story telling brand new products in new and exciting spaces. There is something magical when an idea once envisioned in a room with a reduced group of people is validated through research and ends up becoming a real product or a guiding piece towards a real product for people to see and experience. These projects can take many different shapes. I’ve done some where the final goal was to craft a usable product, testable prototypes and outline the case for a product and others where the final output was to create a film with a simple, yet compelling narrative.

I thrive in contributing and leading these projects even though they end up being highly confidential.

Product launches & landing pages.

Product launches & landing pages.

A big big part of my career has been devoted to working on websites celebrating or supporting the launch of products or services. Over the years I've worked on and directed experiences for companies such as Lonely Planet, redoing their homepage back in 2016, CNN, EA, Activison, the first iteration of Apple Newsroom, Decentraland at launch or recently the web framework and landing pages for the new products at Opalcamera.com.

The web is, still to this day, an exciting space to craft experiences and tell stories. I love ideating, designing and directing all the materials needed (3D, Photography, illustrations) to create memorable moments, push what’s possible on the web and tell the best story possible.

Interactive Installations.

As an extension of my work on digital platforms I’ve had the opportunity to work and lead teams working on physical installations part of temporary and permanent exhibitions in events and office buildings. I’ve done some of this work for Microsoft in the past and recently with the Huge Inc team for Google in one of their most recent owned buildings in Mountain View.

5

Mixed and augmented reality.

I’m extremely passionate about future ambient interfaces and mixed reality use cases. I had the opportunity to extend my regular product work to MR/AR while at Microsoft and later with Oculus a few years ago and have been incorporating that to my work ever since.

My work as a designer, and as a leader wouldn’t be possible without the teams of ICs and managers I’ve been fortunate to lead and assemble and nurture over the years. During my time at Huge Inc. I led the Oakland office and built a team of over 20 people that included creative directors, visual designers, copywriters, experience designers, motion and 3D artists.
